The play covers the entire life of Saint Joan of Arc and contains six scenes and an epilogue. Because of the way Shaw portrays Joan as refusing to accept any authority by the Catholic Church, many have taken his play as an argument that Joan of Arc was the first protestant. Shaw's approach was to portray Joan and as real human being flawed with a stubborn streak that would ultimately lead to her downfall. Due in large part to the theatrical success of Saint Joan, Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1925. George Bernard Shaw's classic play about Saint Joan of Arc was first performed in 1923 in New York and is considered one of his greatest achievements.
